The difference of Acrylic Board and Plexiglass Sheet

Acrylic Board and Plexiglass Sheet are very similar products. But subtle differences do exist. Let’s break down the difference between plexiglass and acrylic.

What is acrylic?

Acrylic is a transparent thermoplastic homopolymer. It is also a plastic – specifically polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Its emergence makes glass no longer the only option. Of course, acrylic is not a complete replacement for glass in all industries. After all, glass is cheaper and easier to recycle than acrylic board, but the acrylic board is stronger, more shatter-resistant, and more resistant to elements and corrosion than glass. Our common eye lenses are made of acrylic. Because acrylic, in addition to being less reflective than glass, is more scratch and shatter resistant, reducing the amount of glare.

What is plexiglass?

Plexiglass sheet is a clear acrylic sheet used exclusively as a generic term to refer to several different products manufactured under different names, including the original brand name Plexiglass. When acrylic was created in the early 1900s, one of the products produced using it was registered as plexiglass. Today, many manufacturers produce plexiglass acrylic products sold under the Acrylite, Crylux, Lucite, and Perspex brands.

The only difference between acrylic board and Plexiglass sheet: is the production process

  • There are two production processes for acrylic sheets:
  1. Cell Casting – The cell casting process involves pouring unreacted acrylic resin between two sheets of glass to form a cell. After the reaction was complete and the acrylic cured, the glass was separated from the acrylic and the acrylic sheet was inspected. Because the process requires more time and labor, battery-cast acrylic sheets are more expensive but are generally higher quality and more durable.
  2. Extrusion Process – Extruded acrylic is manufactured using an extrusion process. Acrylic is continuously extruded to form an acrylic sheet.
  • There is only one production process for plexiglass sheets

that is, the battery casting process. So if you’re paying more for a plexiglass panel, you’re paying more than just the brand name. You’re paying for a more substantial manufacturing process, and often a product customized to your needs.

In conclusion, if you are considering the difference between acrylic sheets and plexiglass sheets. The truth is, there are more similarities than differences. Often, plexiglass and acrylic products known as plexiglass have very similar qualities.
